UPCEA eDesign Collaborative ThinkTank Roadshow: Appalachian State University (AppState)
February 26, 2021 | 1:00 – 3:00 PM ET
Facilitating Online Teaching Excellence
While the majority of professional development initiatives targeting quality online course development focus on course design and development processes, few address the actual course facilitation process. As such, we developed a program, not only focused on course design and development, but also addressing inclusive and engaging approaches to facilitating online learning. The goal in doing so was to support faculty with developing courses that grounded in inclusive and ‘humanized’ approaches to facilitating engaged learning.
Why Appalachian State?
Since pivoting online in the spring of 2020, Academic Affairs administration at Appalachian State has provided resources aimed at supporting faculty with the design and development of high-quality online courses. A grant application process was launched in April 2020 that resulted in two cohorts of faculty (~150) participating in a structured professional development institute experience providing them the skills, knowledge, and resources needed to develop engaging and interactive courses. A comprehensive and supportive institute was developed for this purpose that focused on engaging faculty in a reflective, engaging, and collaborative experience to develop their courses.
