This course is offered at no cost to first-time online professional development participants from UPCEA member organizations. Enrollments are limited to one individual per member organization. Description

What does an academic administrator need to know in order to work and navigate within an academic enterprise?  What terminology, standards, roles, and structures govern and guide the contemporary university?  This course provides an understanding of definitions, roles and titles, processes, and organizational governance models needed to be conversant and adept in navigating within the academic ecosystem.

  • Development of higher education jargon 
  • Impact of language on culture of higher education
  • Influence of language on the internal and external systems of governance in higher education
  • Institutional and program-level accreditation 
  • The language of professional, continuing, and online education

Learning Objectives

  • Demonstrate an understanding of language development and how higher education jargon has developed over time
  • Identify where our use of jargon negatively impacts communication with our students and community
  • Identify how institutions use of language represents who they are  through their home page
  • Understand how language influences the internal and external systems of governance in higher education.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of accreditation at the institutional level and the language that is used to describe accreditation
  • Understanding how PCO is embedded within higher education and how it’s label reflects the position within an institution.

Who should take this course? 

This course is designed for early-to-mid career higher education administrators, particularly those in professional, continuing, and online education units who seek a deeper understand of how the language of higher education impacts the culture and and institutions of higher ed. 

Format and schedule

This is a four week course consisting of about five hours of weekly course work made up of readings, asynchronous activities, and assignments. Additionally, there will be a total of five 90-minute live class meeting via Zoom. The format of these meetings will be 35-40 minute larger group discussion after which participants will move into breakout room for more in-depth conversations. The schedule for the live class meetings is: 

  • Thursday January 13, 2022 at 1:30 ET: Course Introduction and Welcome 
  • Thursday January 20, 2022 at 1:30 ET:  Discussion of week 1 content 
  • Thursday January 27, 2022 at 1:30 ET: Discussion of week 2 Content
  • Thursday February 3, 2022 at 1:30 ET: Discussion of week 3 Content
  • Thursday February 11, 2022 at 1:30 ET: Discussion of week 4 content and course wrap up

  • Cancellation Policy: Registrants who request cancellation by 5:00 pm EST on the Friday after the course begins will have the option to transfer that registration one time to a colleague at their institution or to any other Online PD course offered within six months of cancellation. If no suitable offerings are available within six months at the time of cancellation, registrants can request a refund of their registration fee minus a $50.00 administrative fee. No transfers or refunds will be available after the first week of the course. Cancellation requests must be made in writing and sent to pd@upcea.edu
