UPCEA eDesign Collaborative ThinkTank Roadshow: Brigham Young University (Virtual)

Description

UPCEA eDesign Collaborative ThinkTank Roadshow: Brigham Young University (Virtual)

Brigham Young University October 4, 2019 Theme: Modified Agile Development & Workflow Processes to Improve Your Course Development

In the interest of providing more opportunities for eDC members, this ThinkTank is entirely virtual. This is a two-hour event where we get to know a new university team and have a working session together.

If you are involved in instructional design, you know that working through the trials of content development to design a course is challenging on its own. When you mix in the myriad of process steps and consider all the handoffs and back and forth; the SME, editing, QC, media, the waiting, more back and forth, etc. you wonder if the course will ever hurdle all the barriers and get out the door.

While not the “silver bullet” to solving all design process challenges, BYU’s Continuing Education Academic Services Department has made a concerted effort to improve its design process by implementing a new design and development approach to minimize the handoffs, the waiting, the back and forth, etc. Minimizing these hurdles by using a modified Agile Development process, as learned from the software development world, some order to the chaos that is instructional design has emerged.

Combining the modified Agile Development process and its stages of course development (approval, design, development, pilot) with an electronic workflow process and tracking system Academic Services appears to have experienced: a more efficient workflow, speedier course delivery, more visibility to key milestones, and much more accurate resource and project completion projections.

With replicable processes and approach, the information shared will provide very practical ideas for how participants can apply similar principles to address the challenges of getting their courses out the door. Please join us!

Why Brigham Young University – Independent Study

Established in 1921, BYU Independent Study courses began with a focus on the individual learner through a well-rounded correspondence curriculum. That focus on the learner has never wavered, especially now in the digital age with the ability to translate individual learning needs into both asynchronous and synchronous learning opportunities. Over the last 98 years, our reach and our capacity to serve have increased tremendously—we now offer more than 550 courses serving students from all 50 states and over 90 countries. Our best-in-class online courses are provided at the university, high school and middle school levels. With both online and blended learning courses, students receive instruction and content adapted to their needs at a distant university campus to fill gaps in course schedule and meet student convenience, to recover lost credits in high school and middle school, or meet to BYU matriculated students degree needs. Most course enrollments are open to anyone, at any time of year, with a year to complete the course.
