UPCEA eDesign Collaborative ThinkTank Roadshow: Washington State University (WSU)

May 28, 2021 | 1:00 – 3:00 PM ET

The Right Questions: Facilitating Meaningful Dialogue with Faculty about Assessments

As instructional designers, faculty rely on us for guidance in tackling a variety of learning outcomes and course needs. In this session, we will discuss the what and why of assessment, covering a variety of modalities including – emergency-response remote, fully online, hybrid, and in-person. We will also engage in both large and small group conversations focused on previous discussions with faculty regarding assessment.

We will explore considerations like: how do you help guide faculty in determining which assessment type is ideal? How do you encourage and support the implementation of authentic assessment? What strategies do you use to ease faculty concerns about a strategy being too much work?

We encourage you to come with your questions and experiences to share.

Why Washington State University?
The instructional design team at WSU serves to discover, implement, and support academic technology that increases faculty efficiency and enhances student access and engagement. They work with all faculty—both on campus and online—to create an environment where innovative pedagogy can flourish, wise experimentation is supported, and all learners receive the most robust and rewarding educational experience possible. The goal of the team is to provide support to faculty looking for ideas to overcome common teaching challenges often through the application of academic technology.

During the pandemic, the need for these services significantly increased in response to the quickly changing educational environment and learning needs of WSU’s teaching staff. In the past year, we have supported hundreds of faculty members in transitioning to an emergency remote environment in addition to the faculty members we support for our fully online Global Campus program.
